The multi-agency rescue and search operation at the site of Sunday's building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan has concluded, with the confirmed death toll at seven and twelve people rescued from the debris, Delhi Police said on Monday (7 September 2026). The decades-old five-storey structure, which housed a boys' hostel called Hostel Daze near Delhi University's South Campus, came down around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair work was underway.
Building owner Hariram Gupta, who had gone untraceable after the collapse, was apprehended from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan on Monday following a Look Out Circular and raids across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh by as many as ten police teams. "Hariram Gupta has been apprehended from Bhiwadi," a police officer said, adding that further examination was underway. An FIR has been registered against Gupta and others at South Campus Police Station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections covering culpable homicide not amounting to murder, negligent conduct with respect to buildings, and endangering the life or safety of others.
The MCD has placed five South Zone officials under suspension pending disciplinary proceedings: Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranvir Singh, Executive Engineer Lalit Kumar Goel, Assistant Engineer Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar. The Delhi High Court, led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, has agreed to an urgent hearing on a PIL seeking compensation for victims' families and mandatory safety audits of PGs and hostels citywide. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, and students affiliated with SFI and KYS held a protest march at DU's North Campus demanding wider accountability.
MCD officials said the structure was built on roughly 55 square yards in a resettlement colony where only a ground-plus-one building had been sanctioned, with no approved plan for the additional floors. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said water had accumulated in the basement and that ongoing repair work on the old structure triggered the collapse. The civic body has ordered the demolition of a neighbouring structure, Property No. 13, giving its owner three days to comply, and directed sealing of unauthorised buildings with more than four floors citywide.
