On the evening of September 12, 2026, a boat carrying 12 Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Padma River near Chapainawabganj in Bangladesh after being hit by strong winds, high waves, and powerful currents. The vessel had left Bakherali Ghat around 5 pm, bound for Jahurpur in Narayanpur union, and overturned roughly 20 minutes into the crossing. Alert troops of the Border Security Force's 71 Battalion, Malda Sector, spotted the passengers struggling in the water near Border Out Post Khandua and rescued 10 of the 12 people onboard, including three women, four men, three children, and a newborn infant.
The BSF team launched a speed boat from the Taranagar area in Lalgola, Murshidabad district, West Bengal, and pulled all 10 survivors to safety on the Indian side. Among them was a 30-day-old infant who was in critical condition at the time of rescue. The child received immediate first aid and was rushed to the nearest government hospital, where he was later stabilised along with the rest of the group, who also underwent medical evaluation.
In an official post from its handle @BSF_India, the force described the operation as swift and courageous, and confirmed the infant was later reported stable. After completing necessary formalities, BSF handed over all 10 rescued nationals to troops of the 53 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion at the Faridpur border around 10 pm the same night, following a company commander level flag meeting. BGB officials then reunited the group with their relatives in the presence of local public representatives.
Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mustafizur Rahman, Commanding Officer of the 53 BGB Battalion, confirmed the details of the handover. The rescued included Russel, 26; Ibrahim, 50; Sawdagar, 40; Ibrahim, 60; Sakhina, 45; Nilufa, 35; Tania, 22, with her infant; Sanaullah, 9; and Al Amin, 9, all residents of Jahurpur Bokripara in Narayanpur union, Chapainawabganj district. Wasim, 25, swam back to the Bangladeshi shore on his own, while Mostafa, 60, remained unaccounted for in most reports.
